Our work includes discreet systems for bars, shops, churches, pubs and restaurants - ask for details of our hidden panel speakers. We can also install integrated weatherproof long-run sound systems for large pleasure parks, piers and shopping areas. We have also installed complete PA systems for nightclubs and music venues such as Brighton's Concorde 2.

Case Study: A V Installation for the Parkinsons Disease Society Boardroom.

"Stop living in Cloud-Cuckoo land!"

The Society approached us in 2002 to design and install a speech enhancement system for their boardroom., with the stipulation that it must be wireless as some of the board members suffer from this disabling condition and there was to be as little potential for hazard as possible. This got me scratching my head for a while: I obviously wanted to use condenser mics, to get the benefit of their greater speech quality, but this left the problem of how to supply the biasing voltage they need in order to function at all.

I rang various suppliers to discuss suitable products, one of whom replied "stop living in cloud cuckoo land!". Then I hit upon a solution using products from Shure. I designed the system around small boundary effect mics which have a very low profile on the board table, a multi-channel radio system and an auto-mixer, which provided such features as auto- muting of any channels not in use. I assembled a sample system in our demonstration room and invited them to come in for a trial run. The order followed a few days later and shortly afterwards the system was installed. It turned out that we were the only one of the companies invited to quote that had managed to fulfil the wireless requirement.

I had put a lot of effort into the feedback-suppression aspect and they were immediately delighted with the performance of the system. In 2005 they moved the boardroom and we were asked to transfer the equipment, at the same time integrating the video projectors with two laptop presentation points. All continued well until one fateful night in 2007 when the equipment rack was subjected to a heavy and sustained soaking from a burst water main; everything was dried carefully but failed to function properly. They decided to re-install from scratch and, happily, Playback Systems was once again invited to do the job.
